Why choose John C. Boyd Literacy Foundation?

Real people, real books, real results.

At the John C. Boyd Literacy Foundation, literacy support begins with people: students developing as readers, staff strengthening their instruction, and organizations serving their communities. We work with schools, nonprofits, and community organizations to plan services around their literacy goals, offering one-on-one and small-group tutoring—in person and live online—along with professional development for literacy staff.

We also help organizations explore grant opportunities and plan literacy services, with a priority on expanding access for underserved communities. Whether you are considering tutoring for students, training for your team, or a new community literacy initiative, we begin by listening to your needs. Together, we can identify a practical next step toward supporting the readers you serve.

How We Work Together

We Start by Listening

Tell us about your community, the students and staff you support, and your literacy goals. We begin by understanding your priorities and the resources available.

We Explore the Options

Together, we consider how tutoring, professional development, and literacy planning could support your goals. When relevant, we also help explore potential grant opportunities.

We Clarify the Next Steps

Before moving forward, we discuss the proposed services, responsibilities, scheduling, and costs so your organization can make an informed decision.

How We Can Help

Tutoring

We offer one-on-one and small-group tutoring, in person and live online. Individual tutoring provides focused attention, while small groups create opportunities for shared learning and interaction. We work with your school or organization to understand students’ reading needs and explore a tutoring plan that fits your literacy goals, schedule, and setting.

Professional Development

Support the people who support your readers. We provide professional development for literacy staff, beginning with the instructional needs and questions that matter to your organization. Whether you are planning staff training or connecting professional development with student tutoring, we can discuss your priorities and develop an appropriate plan together.

Leadership Institute

Our Leadership Institute provides training for the educators who teach and develop teacher supervisors. We work with your organization to understand these trainers’ learning priorities and plan professional development focused on how they prepare supervisors to guide and support teachers’ literacy instruction. The focus is on strengthening the people who develop instructional leadership across your organization.

Grant Opportunity Guidance

We help schools, nonprofits, and community organizations explore grant opportunities that may support their literacy goals. We also help consider how tutoring or professional development could fit within a potential funding request. Your organization leads its application, while we help clarify the proposed literacy services and their role in your plan.

Literacy Program Planning

A practical literacy plan starts with understanding whom you want to serve and what you hope to accomplish. We work with your organization to explore tutoring and professional development options, discuss priorities and available resources, and identify a manageable next step for your school or community program.

School and Community Partnerships

Schools, nonprofits, and community organizations play an important role in connecting people with literacy support. We welcome partnerships that bring your knowledge of the community together with our tutoring, professional development, and literacy planning. Expanding access for underserved communities is a priority as we explore opportunities to work together.
